Background of the Study:
Urbanization in Onitsha North Local Government, Anambra State, has led to significant shifts in healthcare practices, particularly affecting indigenous medical traditions. Rapid urban growth has brought changes in lifestyle, access to modern healthcare, and shifts in cultural norms (Iwu, 2023). As urban infrastructure expands, traditional practices, which were once predominant in rural settings, are increasingly influenced by modern medical paradigms. This transition has both positive and negative implications; while improved access to formal healthcare is a benefit, the erosion of indigenous knowledge and practices may lead to a loss of cultural heritage (Chima, 2024). Recent studies indicate that understanding the impact of urbanization on these practices is essential for preserving cultural identity while promoting effective healthcare (Nwosu, 2025). This study evaluates the extent to which urbanization has transformed indigenous healthcare practices and explores strategies for their sustainable integration within urban contexts.

Statement of the Problem:
Urbanization in Onitsha North is altering traditional healthcare practices, resulting in a diminishing reliance on indigenous methods. This shift raises concerns about the loss of cultural heritage and the potential underutilization of beneficial traditional therapies. Moreover, the rapid urban transition poses challenges for integrating indigenous practices with modern healthcare systems, necessitating a thorough evaluation of its impacts (Iwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the effects of urbanization on indigenous healthcare practices.
  2. To evaluate changes in the utilization of traditional therapies.
  3. To recommend strategies for integrating indigenous and modern healthcare practices.

Research Questions:

  1. How has urbanization impacted indigenous healthcare practices in Onitsha North?
  2. What are the trends in the use of traditional versus modern healthcare services?
  3. How can traditional practices be sustainably integrated with urban healthcare services?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Urbanization significantly reduces the use of indigenous healthcare practices.
  2. There is a notable shift from traditional to modern healthcare among urban residents.
  3. Integration strategies can preserve indigenous practices while improving healthcare delivery.

Significance of the Study:
This study provides insights into how urbanization affects indigenous healthcare practices, offering recommendations to preserve cultural heritage while ensuring effective healthcare delivery. The findings will guide policymakers in creating balanced health strategies in Onitsha North (Iwu, 2023; Chima, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Urbanization: The process of population concentration and infrastructural development in urban areas.
  • Indigenous Healthcare Practices: Traditional methods of health treatment rooted in cultural heritage.
  • Integration: The incorporation of traditional practices within modern healthcare frameworks.
